Adding a co-teacher

Before a co-teacher can access a class with another teacher, the co-teacher must be added first. As the original teacher, add a co-teacher by going to Setup Class, then Co-Teaching, then click on [Add+] Faculty. From here the original teacher can look up any other teacher by name or email and can also remove any co-teacher.

Co-teachers will have different permissions inside of a teacher's classroom. After being added to a class, the co-teacher will automatically be defaulted to not have the settings to the class (Setup Class) and the gradebook. Co-Teachers are also only given “View-Only” access to the rest of the class material by default.

Co-teacher permissions

However, these settings for the co-teacher can be changed. The original teacher can access the permission settings for the co-teacher Co-Teaching category of the class settings. Teachers will see a small text box saying Edit Permissions next to the name of the co-teacher where they can manually select the different permissions that the co-teacher will receive.

Permissions that teachers can grant co-teachers are:

  • "Display name as co-teacher to students"
    • The co-teacher's name will be displayed to the students so that students see their name in the class listing and display the co-teacher’s “About Me” on the homepage when enabled. Students will not see the co-teacher when this feature is disabled.
  • "Can view grades"
    • Co-teachers can see the gradebook and student submissions.
Note: Co-teachers cannot edit students' grades without the "Can edit grades" permission.
  • "Can edit announcements"
    • Co-teachers will be able to create and edit announcements to the class.
  • "Can edit Course Materials"
    • Co-teachers will be able to create and edit course materials including the homepage, modules pages, assignments, assessments and discussions.
  • "Can edit grades"
    • Co-teachers will have access to the gradebook and can edit students' grades.
Note: Please also enable “Can see grades” to fully allow gradebook access.
  • "Can manage roster"
    • Co-teachers will have the ability to have all the permissions from the Students tab and can add, import, and remove students
  • "Can manage student groups"
    • Co-teachers will have the ability to create, edit and disband student groups within the class
  • "Can manage class settings"
    • Co-teachers can access the Setup Class tab and can manage all the settings that are embedded in it
  • "Can create students"
    • Co-teachers will have the ability to create new students to add to the class
  • "Can invite teachers"
    • Co-teachers will be able to invite other teachers to the class as co-teachers.

Different cases for permissions

Note that these permissions are selective and do not have to be all selected in order to allow the co-teacher to operate in the class; each permission can be individually selected to a teacher's liking. Some of these permissions may be useful in different cases. All permissions mostly depend on the situation of the teacher and the class.

For example, if a teacher has an assistant and would like to allow them to help grade assignments but not see the gradebook then the teacher can turn on Can see grades to allow the assistant to see and grade any student submission while also not being able to change grades.

If a teacher were to have an instructional assistant for example then the teacher could allow the assistant to see activities posted but not make edits to them by leaving the permissions empty.

Finally, in the case of a long-term sub, a teacher can give the co-teacher to have more control over the class by selecting more of the permissions seen.
