A student can access work that isn't in the assignments section from the dashboard through the modules page.
From a student class homepage, head to their modules and there, students can view all of their assignments (discussions, files, etc.).
Just know that sometimes teachers may remove certain assignments from their modules, assignments, or discussions page so students may not be able to see them anymore.
